E-Glow in Mbita, Homa Bay: Breaking the Cycle of Jaboya and Transforming Lives

In the heart of Mbita, Homa Bay, a community grapples with the devastating legacy of the "sex for fish" trade, locally known as "Jaboya." This exploitative practice has not only perpetuated a cycle of poverty but has also contributed to a staggering HIV prevalence rate of 35%, ravaging families and communities for generations. E-Glow is committed to breaking this cycle and empowering women to take control of their lives and build a brighter future.

Our comprehensive program in Mbita addresses the root causes of Jaboya by providing women with sustainable economic alternatives and essential resources. Through access to Spiro electric vehicles, women gain the means to establish independent transportation and delivery businesses, freeing themselves from reliance on exploitative bartering systems. These EVs not only offer a path to financial freedom but also contribute to a cleaner environment, aligning with SDG 13 (Climate Action).

Furthermore, E-Glow equips women with solar dryers and coolers, addressing the critical issue of post-harvest fish loss. By enhancing fish preservation and increasing market value, these tools empower women to maximize their earnings and secure a more stable income, directly contributing to SDG 8 (Decent Work and Economic Growth).

Central to our approach is a holistic training program designed to transform lives. In partnership with AA, women receive training on safe EV operation, maintenance, and basic repair, ensuring they are equipped to manage their businesses effectively. GVRC provides critical gender-based violence (GBV) awareness training, empowering women to understand their rights and access support systems, fostering a safer and more equitable environment. Spiro offers technical training on EV technology, equipping women with valuable skills for the growing electric vehicle industry.

By providing these women with the tools, skills, and support they need to succeed, E-Glow is not only breaking the cycle of Jaboya but also driving gender equality (SDG 5) and fostering sustainable development in Mbita.
